Following a number of contentious offside decisions in recent weeks, the association has decided to roll-out Hawk-Eye’s 3D Offside System.
The Hawk-Eye VAR technology, which is approved by FIFA, uses a third dimension to triangulate players’ body parts to ensure correct decisions are made on the most crucial match changing incidents. The VAR will have immediate access to this technology so that the decisions can be communicated with the referee, the broadcasters and fans.
Specific offside cameras are currently being installed in each of the 15 CSL stadiums with expectations for the system to go live in June 2019.
Ben Crossing, Managing Director of Asia, Middle East & Africa, says "We are delighted to be implementing our industry-leading 3D-Offside technology with the Chinese Football Association and Chinese Super League in a very positive move for Chinese football. Ensuring that the closest decisions are correct is of the upmost importance and this technology will bring clarity and credibility to VAR decisions.
It is an exciting time for Chinese football with China being the first country to introduce VAR in two leagues and now the first country in Asia to use 3D-Offside technology. The CSL will be joining other top global leagues and confederations by implementing one of the most advanced technologies used for VAR.
In partnership with the CFA, we have worked hard to make sure that the VAR technology and officials are of the highest level since the system was introduced in 2018. There are now 36 VARs, 53 AVARs and 32 Replay Operators VAR accredited by IFAB and we are looking forward to continuing our collaboration to deliver flawless VAR technology in China."
Cui Enlei, Deputy Director of CFA Refereeing Department, says “Hawk-Eye is a leading innovator in the sports technology world and we are proud to be working alongside the technology provider responsible for successfully delivering VAR at the most recent FIFA World Cup. Since its introduction to China in 2018, we are very pleased with how the implementation of Hawk-Eye’s VAR technology has gone and look forward to creating a better future for Chinese Football.”
