Precision and data can change the game. We live by this principle, at Hawk-Eye Innovations, and today we’re applying that same philosophy to one of the greatest challenges of our time. We’re proud to announce that Hawk-Eye has officially joined the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework, aligning our global operations with a collective vision to combat climate change.
As a Sony Group company, this commitment strengthens our dedication to the Sony Road to Zero initiative, Sony’s global environmental plan, striving to achieve a zero environmental footprint throughout the lifecycle of our products and business activities. It also marks a specific pledge to the sports community: to use our technology, our reach, our voice to safeguard the future of the planet we play on.
Hilary Wells, Chief Administration Officer at Sony's sports businesses, highlighted: "Sport has an unparalleled power: to unite people and drive collective action. By joining the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework, Hawk-Eye is pledging to use its unique position at the heart of the sporting ecosystem to advocate for the planet. We are committed to a culture of responsibility, within our own teams, and by working alongside our partners and fans. Our objective is to educate, share knowledge, and reduce our climate impact. Ultimately, it's our responsibility to ensure that the global stage we help build remains vibrant and resilient."
The Goal: A 1.5°C Pathway
The sports world is uniquely vulnerable to a changing climate, from extreme heat affecting athlete health to rising sea levels threatening coastal venues. By joining this UN-backed framework, Hawk-Eye commits to a trajectory aimed at limiting global warming to well below 2°C, as enshrined in the Paris Agreement.
Our targets are ambitious, but clear:
- 50% Reduction: We are committed to reducing our Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by 50% by 2030.
- Net Zero by 2040: We aim to reach net zero GHG emissions across all three scopes by 2040—an objective already harmonized with Sony’s global environmental goals.
Our Five Guiding Principles
Joining the framework is more than a signature; it is a commitment to five core principles that now govern how we operate:
- Systematic Responsibility: defining new sustainability strategies that place environmental impact at the heart of our business decisions.
- Reducing Climate Impact: measuring our global footprint and taking direct action to lean out our operations.
- Educating for Action: using our platform to share knowledge and help our partners enhance their own climate impact frameworks.
- Sustainable Consumption: implementing rigorous procurement policies that encourage our providers and partners to adopt responsible consumption habits.
- Advocacy through Communication: using our " camera lens" on the sporting world to promote awareness and advocate for climate action across all our available channels.
Pledge, Plan, Proceed, Report
Sustainability requires transparency. Under this framework, our commitment follows a clear roadmap.
Our leadership has committed to these targets at the highest level. Within the next 12 months, we will submit a detailed action plan outlining exactly how we will meet our 2030 and 2040 goals.
We are taking immediate steps to reduce emissions, from optimising our remote production capabilities to rethinking our global logistics to cover global events on an annual basis. We will also provide annual reporting on our emissions to ensure we remain accountable to the UN, our partners, and the fans.
A Unifying Tool for Change
Sport has a unique power: it unites people. As we celebrate our silver jubilee this year, we recognise that the next 25 years of sports technology must be defined by more than just accuracy and innovation; they must be defined by responsibility.
By collaborating with other participants in this UN framework, we are excited to learn, share, and lead. Together with our clients and the global sports community, we are tracking toward a more sustainable future.
After all, there is no "replay" for our planet.
