What makes or breaks a historic victory in modern, elite football? It is a matter of millimetres and milliseconds. With those microscopic margins comes immense pressure for match officials, especially as the world's best players take the pitch on the most important international stages to battle for career-defining trophies.
At Hawk-Eye Innovations, we pride ourselves on developing innovative technology with a clear objective: to make the invisible visible, and to support the integrity of sport through unmatched precision. The next generation of football officiating is now unfolding on the biggest of stages: Advanced Semi-Automated Offside Technology (Advanced SAOT).
Developed through a shared vision of innovation, the logic and automation driving this system are directly connected to the Football Technology Centre, the strategic joint venture between FIFA and Hawk-Eye, dedicated to building the algorithms that pave the way for the future of football officiating, performance, and fan engagement.
The Evolution: From SAOT to Advanced SAOT
When Semi-Automated Offside Technology (SAOT) debuted in top-tier football in 2022, it transformed match officiating. It represented the latest milestone in a continuous line of innovation that began with the Virtual Offside Line (VOL) in 2016 and advanced to 3D line-drawing in 2018. By leveraging live tracking data to pinpoint player and ball positions at all times, SAOT provided Video Assistant Referees with a reliable blueprint to make faster, more efficient offside decisions.
The game of football moves fast, and tech must move faster. Traditional SAOT requires the video operations room to receive an alert, validate the automatically generated offside line, and communicate the verdict down to the pitch. While accurate, this workflow takes valuable seconds of match time, often halting a goal celebration on the pitch and leaving fans in the stands (or behind a screen) in a state of anxious suspense while waiting for a potential overturn.
Advanced SAOT removes that delay, making critical match moments definitive in the "now." Instead of being a function of the VAR system, Advanced SAOT now acts as a real-time, active assistant to the entire refereeing team. Direct audio alerts are sent automatically in under a second to the officials on the pitch through their headsets, a seamless process similar to how officials are instantly alerted when a ball crosses the goal line using Goal Line Technology. In a way, the system returns the order of communications to the pre-technology days with the onfield officials receiving the information first.
How Advanced SAOT Works
The infrastructure powering Advanced SAOT relies on a high-speed, synchronised data matrix capable of processing hundreds of thousands of data points per second.
- SkeleTRACK, Multi-camera Optical Tracking: an array of high-frame rate tracking cameras captures 29 skeletal data points for each player. The system captures every limb, joint, and extremity relevant to a decision.
- Instant AI-Driven Process: the Football Technology Centre’s proprietary machine-learning algorithms fuse the skeletal data points with the ball's contact timeline. The system applies consistent offside logic, so that when an attacking player receives the ball from a teammate in an offside position, the automated workflow registers the infringement instantly.
- Confidence Metrics: Advanced SAOT uses a built-in confidence metric system to validate every offside event, ensuring all decisions made automatically by the system are of the highest accuracy.
- Direct to Pitch: the system bypasses the traditional VAR validation loop entirely, delivering an instant audio alert directly to the match officials. Assistant referees can raise their flags in real time, eliminating agonizing delays, curbing injury risks on extended plays, and bringing back the uninhibited joy of celebration. Fans and players can finally react in the moment without second-guessing whether a goal will be ruled out minutes later.
- Evolved Fan Experience: once a decision is confirmed, the positional tracking data used by match officials feeds directly into a rendering engine. This automated workflow generates a 3D animated avatar sequence for stadium screens and live broadcasts, ready for the very first replay. Beyond speed, these broadcast visualisations benefit from dedicated player scanning, producing highly accurate 3D renders that deliver unprecedented photorealism to fans.
The Human Element, Amplified
As technology evolves and we celebrate innovation, it remains critical to remember that these systems are not designed to replace referees, but to empower them. Advanced SAOT handles the objective, spatial mathematics so that human officials can focus their elite expertise on the subjective nuances of the game, such as player intent and interference.
With the progressive adoption of this advanced officiating system, Hawk-Eye remains committed to democratising these advancements, ensuring that the innovative technologies deployed on the world's biggest stages enhances officiating across all tiers of football.
